Bilzen lies in the Belgian province of Limburg, between Hasselt and Maastricht. On a map the town has a compact historic centre, with streets gathering around the market, surrounded by residential areas and a countryside of fields, orchards and villages. The Demer valley and the gentle slopes of the Haspengouw region give the landscape a soft, rolling character.
A few kilometres from the centre stands Alden Biesen, a former commandery of the Teutonic Order. Its castle, moats and formal gardens appear on the map as a precise geometric shape, sharply different from the looser patterns of farms and lanes around it. Today the estate is used as a cultural and conference centre.
From 1965 to 1981 the town hosted Jazz Bilzen, one of Europe's earliest large open-air music festivals.
