Binche is a small town in the Hainaut province of Wallonia, best known for its carnival. From above, its most striking feature is the ring of medieval ramparts that still encloses much of the historic centre. The ring is one of the most complete surviving town walls in Belgium, and along it the round towers show on the map as small bumps in the outline.
Inside the walls, the streets bend and narrow the way medieval streets do, all drawn towards the Grand-Place and its town hall. Outside the ring, the town spreads more loosely into later housing, rail lines and the fields of Hainaut, so the map shows a clear line between old and new. The contrast between the tight, enclosed core and the open land beyond gives Binche its character on paper.
The carnival of Binche, with its Gilles in wax masks and ostrich-feather hats, is recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible heritage of humanity, and the town also has a museum devoted to masks and carnival.
