Bom Jesus da Lapa lies on the right bank of the São Francisco River in western Bahia. It is one of Brazil's major pilgrimage centres. The sanctuary of Bom Jesus is set inside caves in a large limestone outcrop near the river, and every year it draws pilgrims from across the country.
On a map the town is organised by these two features. The broad river runs along one side, with sandbanks and islands visible in its channel. The rocky hill rises near the centre as a clear break in the street pattern, and streets spread out from the waterfront and around the hill toward the dry backcountry.
