Borlänge lies in Dalarna in central Sweden, on the Dalälven, one of the country's largest rivers. The river runs through the town from northwest to southeast, and the town spreads along both banks. Bridges link the sides. From above you see a modern industrial town: a practical grid centre, housing districts laid out after the war, and large industrial sites along the water, all surrounded by forest.
The town grew with heavy industry, especially the Domnarvet steelworks, now run by SSAB, and paper production. Borlänge is also home to the headquarters of the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket. The historic mining town of Falun is a short distance to the northeast, and together they form the main urban area of Dalarna.
