Bornem is a town in the province of Antwerp, in Flanders, on the right bank of the Scheldt. Its map is shaped by the river. The Scheldt forms the western edge, and a former meander, the Oude Schelde, curves through the land nearby. It was cut off when the river's course changed and now remains as a quiet, looping arm of water.
Bornem Castle, owned for centuries by the de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde family, stands in parkland with ponds close to the old river bend. The town also has the Cistercian Abbey of Sint-Bernardus. The centre is compact and grouped around a church square, and the municipality also includes several villages connected by roads across low, open polder.
