Boskoop lies in South Holland, along the Gouwe between Alphen aan den Rijn and Gouda. From above, it looks unlike most towns. Beyond the centre, the land is divided into very long, narrow strips separated by water, a pattern shaped over centuries by peat digging and tree growing.
For generations, Boskoop has been known for its tree nurseries. The strips of land between the ditches are still used to grow trees, shrubs and ornamental plants, and the town gave its name to the Belle de Boskoop apple. Since 2014 it has been part of the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn.
The Gouwe runs through as a straight waterway. The village core sits along it, and the nursery land stretches out on both sides like combed lines. A Boskoop map poster shows one of the most graphic landscapes in the Netherlands, where every parallel ditch reads clearly in black and white.
