Bourg-la-Reine is one of the smallest communes in the Hauts-de-Seine department, directly south of Paris between Sceaux and Bagneux. On a map it is compact and densely built, with the Avenue du Général Leclerc, the historic road from Paris toward Orléans, running straight through its centre from north to south.
Alongside that avenue runs the RER B, with a station in the heart of the town where the branch to Robinson splits from the main line. These two parallel routes define the map and divide it into eastern and western neighbourhoods of houses, small apartment blocks and gardens. The mathematician Évariste Galois was born here in 1811.
The town also has a history of ceramic production, and Bourg-la-Reine faience was well regarded in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
