Bournemouth faces south across Poole Bay, and from above its defining feature is the long, even curve of the coast. Sandy beaches run for miles beneath low cliffs, and the town spreads along the clifftop and inland. At intervals the coast is notched by chines, steep wooded ravines that cut down to the shore and interrupt the street grid behind them.
The town is young by English standards. The area was little more than heathland until Lewis Tregonwell built a house there in 1810, and it grew as a seaside resort through the Victorian era. The Bourne stream, which gave the town its name, runs through the Upper, Central and Lower Gardens to the pier, forming a green spine through the centre.
