Brades is the de facto capital of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It took on that role after eruptions of the Soufrière Hills volcano in the 1990s forced the abandonment of Plymouth, the former capital in the south. Government functions moved to the safer north of the island, and Brades, once a modest village, became the administrative centre almost by necessity.
From above, there is no grid and no clear centre. Roads follow the contours of the hills, curving and splitting to reach houses scattered along the slopes. Nearby Little Bay, on the northwest coast, has been planned as the site of a new capital and port, so the map captures a place still in the middle of rebuilding its geography.
