Brasil Novo lies in the state of Pará, on the Trans-Amazonian Highway, the BR-230, between Altamira and Medicilândia. Like many towns along this road, it began as part of the colonisation schemes of the 1970s, when plots were laid out along the new highway and settlers came from other parts of Brazil to farm them.
The map around the town is shaped by that planning. Straight side roads, often called vicinais, run at regular intervals from the highway into the land on both sides, creating the fishbone layout that is typical of this part of the Amazon. The town itself is a small, fairly regular grid attached to the main road.
