Brest sits near the western tip of Brittany, on the northern shore of the Rade de Brest, a large sheltered roadstead linked to the Atlantic by a narrow strait known as the Goulet. From above, the city looks outward over this inner sea, and the harbour, naval dockyards and breakwaters form a long band of piers and basins along the shore. Behind them, the city climbs onto a plateau of regular streets.
The Penfeld river cuts a deep, steep-sided valley through the middle of Brest, separating the centre from the Recouvrance district on the west bank. The Pont de Recouvrance, a vertical-lift bridge, crosses near its mouth, and since 2016 an urban cable car has also spanned the valley. Much of the centre was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt along straight, orderly lines, with the Rue de Siam running down toward the Penfeld.

The broad roadstead south of the city opens out into a sheltered inner sea, reached from the ocean through the narrow Goulet strait and ringed by peninsulas.
Rebuilt centre
After wartime destruction, the centre was reconstructed on a regular plan of straight streets and wide blocks, with the Rue de Siam as its main axis.
