Brezno sits in the upper Hron valley, the region known as Horehronie, in central Slovakia. The river runs east to west through the valley, and the town lies along it, hemmed in by rising ground on both sides. From above, the long shape of the valley is clear, with roads and the railway following the river and the town spreading as far as the slopes allow.
At the centre is an elongated town square, lined with older buildings and marked by a town hall with a bell tower. Around it, the historic street pattern gives way to residential blocks and newer neighbourhoods, some climbing onto the lower hillsides. Beyond them, forest covers much of the higher ground.
Brezno has long been a base for the mountains of Horehronie and for the ironworking traditions of the Hron valley.
