Brookings lies in eastern South Dakota, in the flat, open prairie close to the Minnesota border. Like many towns on the northern plains, it is organised around a clear grid of streets aligned with the compass, with a compact downtown and residential blocks spreading evenly around it. Interstate 29 runs along the west side of town, marking a strong vertical line on the map.
The defining feature of Brookings is South Dakota State University, the largest university in the state.
