Bubanza is the capital of the province of the same name in north-western Burundi. It sits in hilly country at the edge of the Imbo lowlands, where the land falls away toward the Rusizi valley and the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. On the map the town appears as a modest network of streets around administrative buildings, schools and a market, surrounded by cultivated slopes.
The province is largely rural, and the land around the town is farmed intensively, with rice grown on the flatter ground below and smallholdings on the hillsides. Bubanza lies within reach of Bujumbura, and roads link it both to the capital's plain and to communes further inland, making it an administrative and market centre for the surrounding hills.
