Budaun lies in western Uttar Pradesh, on the plain not far from the Ganges. From above, the town has a dense, irregular historic core, with streets and lanes packed closely together, surrounded by newer, looser neighbourhoods. Beyond them, the flat countryside stretches out, crossed by straight roads and field boundaries.
The town is one of the older settlements of the region, with a history reaching into the Delhi Sultanate period. Its best-known monument, the Jama Masjid Shamsi, is associated with Iltutmish, who governed Budaun before becoming sultan in Delhi.
