Büyükçekmece lies on Istanbul’s far western shore, where a large lagoon lake opens onto the Sea of Marmara. The town’s shape follows the water. Housing wraps around the lake’s southern mouth and runs along the sea coast, and the lake itself fills a large, open space on the map, framed by hills and farmland rising to the north.
The lake is crossed by one of Mimar Sinan’s best-known bridges, completed in the 1560s for Sultan Süleyman. It is a long stone crossing of four linked sections on the old road to Edirne and the Balkans. The modern coastal highway and the European motorway run parallel to it, drawing their own lines across the water.
A Büyükçekmece map poster shows a seaside town still clearly separate from the metropolis to the east. There are coastal neighbourhoods of summer houses and apartment blocks, a small harbour, and the lake taking up much of the frame.
