Buin is in Maipo Province, south of Santiago, on the flat central valley floor of Chile. The Maipo River runs to the south, and the Andes rise to the east. On the map the town has a clear grid centred on its main square, typical of Chilean towns. Newer housing extends outward, and the surrounding land is a regular pattern of fields, orchards and vineyards.
Buin has long been a farming centre and belongs to the wine-growing area of the Maipo Valley. The Pan-American Highway, Ruta 5, passes the town, and a railway runs south from the capital. Buin keeps a small-town character, even as the edges of greater Santiago reach closer each year.
