Buritizeiro sits on the west bank of the São Francisco River, directly opposite the city of Pirapora. From above, the two form a pair divided by the wide channel of the river. A bridge links them, and the town's streets spread back from the water in a grid that loosens as it reaches the open land of the northern Minas plateau.
The name comes from the buriti, the tall palm that grows along the wetlands and veredas of the Brazilian cerrado. The municipality covers a large, mostly rural area crossed by tributaries and long straight roads, and its identity is closely tied to the river, which has carried boats, trade and stories through this part of Minas Gerais for centuries.
