Butiama lies in the Mara region of northern Tanzania, in hilly country inland from the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. It is best known as the birthplace and resting place of Julius Nyerere, the country's first president, and the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Museum is here. On a map it is a modest place, a loose network of roads and paths among homesteads and fields.
Unlike a planned town, Butiama has no dense grid. Its built areas are scattered, with houses and compounds spread along roads that follow the undulating ground, and larger open spaces where farmland and bush take over.
