Butuan lies in northeastern Mindanao, where the Agusan River, one of the longest rivers in the Philippines, approaches its mouth on Butuan Bay. The river winds through the city and dominates the map, with the main urban area spread across its banks, and wetlands, fishponds and farmland extending toward the coast.
Butuan is one of the oldest documented trading centres in the Philippines. Archaeologists found several balangay, large wooden plank boats, at sites in the city, the oldest dating to around the fourth century, and they are among the earliest watercraft discovered in Southeast Asia. The city is the regional centre of Caraga and a gateway to the Agusan valley.
