Cáceres is built around one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Spain. On a map the old town appears as a tight, walled oval on high ground, filled with narrow lanes, small squares and palace courtyards. Around it the modern city extends in wider streets and larger blocks, particularly toward the south, where most newer neighbourhoods have grown.
The old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its mix of Roman, Islamic, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and its towers and noble houses remain largely intact. The Plaza Mayor sits just below the walls, a long open space that links the historic quarter with the rest of the city and serves as its main meeting point.
