Caen lies on the Orne River about fifteen kilometres from the Channel coast, and on a map the city is organised around a handful of monumental landmarks. The castle founded by William the Conqueror fills a large walled enclosure on a rise north of the centre. The Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames anchor the west and east sides of the old town.
Much of Caen was destroyed during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, and the rebuilt centre mixes new streets with surviving medieval stonework. A canal running alongside the Orne leads northeast from the port basin to Ouistreham on the coast. The university and the Mémorial de Caen, a museum dedicated to peace, stand on higher ground to the north.
