Calarcá lies in the department of Quindío, in Colombia's coffee region, just east of the city of Armenia. The Quindío River runs between the two. From above, the town's grid of streets and plazas sits on sloping ground at the foot of the Central Cordillera. The blocks give way to ravines and green hillsides, and then to the steep terrain the road climbs on its way east towards the La Línea pass.
The surrounding hills are covered in coffee farms, plantain groves and patches of forest, which gives the map a fine, broken texture beyond the town. Calarcá is home to the Quindío Botanical Garden, with its well-known butterfly house, and it is the western gateway to the mountain crossing between the Coffee Axis and Bogotá.
