Carolina Map Poster & Print
Carolina lies in the south of Maranhão, on the east bank of the Tocantins River, directly opposite the town of Filadélfia in the state of Tocantins. The river is the dominant line of the map, wide and gently curving. The town's grid of streets runs down to meet it, with the older quarter closest to the water.
Carolina is best known as the gateway to Chapada das Mesas National Park, a landscape of flat-topped mesas, sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. The Itapecuru falls and Pedra Caída are among the most visited sites in the area. On a map, the park's rivers and escarpments give the surroundings a rugged, branching texture quite unlike the orderly town.
A Carolina map poster brings together the river, the town grid and the start of the wild country beyond. It is a lasting reminder for people from southern Maranhão, and a considered keepsake for travellers who came for the waterfalls and the mesas and left with a strong sense of the place.

Riverside grid
Carolina's streets form a regular grid that extends inland from the riverbank, with the oldest blocks lying closest to the water.
Chapada das Mesas
Beyond town, the national park's streams, cliffs and plateaus add irregular, branching lines that hint at the dramatic scenery just outside the frame.
