Carshalton lies in the London Borough of Sutton, on the southern edge of the city. At its heart are Carshalton Ponds, fed by springs that form one of the sources of the River Wandle, which flows north through south London to the Thames. The ponds, the church above them and the old buildings around them give the centre an unusually village-like character for a London suburb.
From above, the ponds sit at the meeting point of several roads, with the parish church of All Saints on the rise nearby. Carshalton Park, Grove Park and The Oaks add large green spaces to the map, while suburban streets of houses and gardens spread out towards Sutton, Wallington and the open land further south.
