Castelló de la Plana lies on the coastal plain of the Valencian Community, the Plana that gives the city its name, between the Mediterranean and the low mountains of the Desert de les Palmes. The centre sits a few kilometres inland, and on a map it appears as a compact, dense core linked to its port district, the Grau, by long straight roads.
The town was moved down from the hill of the Magdalena to the plain in 1251, with the permission of King James I of Aragon, and the move is still commemorated each year in the Magdalena festivities. In the old centre stands the Fadrí, a free-standing octagonal bell tower beside the co-cathedral of Santa Maria.

The old town forms a dense, irregular cluster of streets around the Plaza Mayor, the co-cathedral and the Fadrí tower, surrounded by wider boulevards.
Harbour and beaches
At the coast the port basins and breakwaters form sharp geometric shapes, with the beaches of the Grau extending north along the shoreline.
