Castres lies in the Tarn department of Occitanie, where the Agout river flows through the town between the Montagne Noire and the plains around Toulouse. From above, the river runs through the centre, with the old town clustered on its banks and bridges connecting both sides. Beyond, the town spreads out in more open streets.
The best-known view in Castres is the row of old houses built right over the Agout, once used by tanners, dyers and weavers. Near the river, the former bishop's palace houses the Goya Museum, and its formal garden was designed after André Le Nôtre. The socialist leader Jean Jaurès was born in Castres in 1859.
