Cerro Azul lies in the Ribeira valley region of Paraná, north of Curitiba, in hilly country with patches of Atlantic forest. The town itself covers a small area of lower ground between slopes. From above, its streets bend to fit the land instead of following a strict grid, and the roads leaving town wind steeply through the hills.
The municipality is known for citrus growing, especially tangerines, and orchards cover many of the surrounding hillsides. On a map, the rural area appears as a fine network of small roads and tracks along ridges and valleys.
