Chala is a town in the Rukwa region of south-western Tanzania, on the high country between Lake Rukwa and Lake Tanganyika. The map shows a compact settlement. A handful of main roads meet near the centre, and a looser mesh of tracks spreads out from there to homesteads and fields. Past the edge of town, the lines drop away quickly and the page opens into wide, empty ground.
That contrast between a dense centre and sparse surroundings is typical of towns across Rukwa. Settlement follows the roads, and farming fills the space in between. From above, Chala reads as a knot tied into a long line of travel, with short spurs reaching into the countryside.
