Chato sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Victoria, in Geita Region, on a stretch of coast broken up by inlets, headlands and islands. On a map, the town is bounded by water. Streets run down toward the shore and stop at the lake, and the lake takes up much of the frame, flat and blank, against the finer grain of the town.
Chato is best known as the hometown of John Magufuli, Tanzania's fifth president. In recent years it has gained new public buildings and an airport, and those newer, straighter developments sit alongside an older, more informal core. Seen from above, the two patterns meet: a tidier layout laid over footpaths and plots that grew up gradually.
