Châu Đốc lies in An Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, close to the Cambodian border, where the Hậu River, the Bassac branch of the Mekong, meets the Châu Đốc River. From above the town sits at a confluence of wide waterways, its streets running along the banks, with canals cutting straight lines through the flat, rice-growing delta around it.
Life on the water shapes the town. Houses on stilts line the riverbanks, and floating fish farms have long been part of the river scene. Across the water lie villages of the Cham community, with their mosques. The town's markets and quays gather close to the river, forming the densest part of the map.
