Chaves is a municipality on the northern side of Marajó Island in the Brazilian state of Pará, at the mouth of the Amazon. It lies just south of the equator, and water dominates its landscape: wide river channels, islands, tidal creeks and seasonally flooded plains. The town itself is small, a modest arrangement of streets on the bank of a broad channel.
Much of the municipality is made up of islands in the estuary and low wetland grazed by cattle and water buffalo, typical of Marajó. Roads are few and boats are the main way to travel. The map reflects that, showing a small cluster of streets inside a vast area of water and land shaped by tides and river currents.
Chaves covers a large territory with few inhabitants, and life here follows the rhythm of the tides and the rainy season.
