Cherthala lies in Alappuzha district in central Kerala, on the thin coastal plain that separates the Arabian Sea from the waters of Vembanad Lake. On the map, this position is everything. The coastline runs straight along one side, the lake shore breaks into inlets on the other, and the town sits in between on a band of low, green land.
Canals and backwater channels cut through the area, and many roads run parallel to them. National Highway 66, the main coastal route through Kerala, passes through the town and forms a clear north–south axis. Cherthala has long been associated with coir, the fibre made from coconut husk, and the palms that supply it cover much of the surrounding land.
