Chhota Gobindpur is a census town in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, just beyond the southeastern side of Jamshedpur. On a map it belongs to the wider spread of the steel city, but it has its own irregular grain. Instead of the planned avenues of the company town next door, it has winding lanes, clusters of housing and small plots.
Jamshedpur grew around the Tata steel works founded in the early twentieth century. Neighbouring settlements such as Chhota Gobindpur expanded as the industrial region drew workers and their families. The result is a map where old village roads meet newer housing blocks, and where you can still see the line between town and countryside.
