Chilpancingo sits in a narrow highland valley in the middle of Guerrero, roughly halfway between Mexico City and the Pacific coast. From above, the city is a long band rather than a disc. It follows the course of the Huacapa River from north to south, while the mountains on either side keep it from spreading very far to the east or west.
The valley floor holds the older centre, with a compact grid of blocks around the main square. Beyond it, newer neighbourhoods climb the lower slopes in irregular curves, and the main highway to Acapulco runs the full length of the valley. The contrast between the orderly core and the looser, contour-following streets gives the map a clear structure.
Chilpancingo is the capital of Guerrero, and in 1813 it hosted the Congress of Anáhuac, where José María Morelos presented his Sentimientos de la Nación.
