Chimaltenango sits on a highland plateau west of Guatemala City, at an altitude where cool mornings and volcano views are part of daily life. It is the capital of the department of the same name, and from above its centre is a regular colonial grid around a central plaza, with newer neighbourhoods reaching out across the surrounding farmland.
The Pan-American Highway runs straight through the city, and much of its activity is organised along this road, which links the capital with the western highlands. Chimaltenango was severely damaged in the 1976 earthquake, and much of what stands today was rebuilt in the decades that followed. Antigua Guatemala lies a short distance away.
