Chiryū is one of the smallest cities in Aichi Prefecture by area, set on the flat Nishi-Mikawa plain between Kariya, Anjō and Toyota. It grew as Chiryū-juku, a post station on the Tōkaidō, the old highway between Edo and Kyoto. The route of that highway still runs through the city and shows on the map as a line older and more winding than the roads around it.
From above, Chiryū is almost entirely built up. Dense residential blocks, narrow lanes and small farm plots fit tightly together, and the city limits disappear into the continuous suburbs of its neighbours. Rail lines meet at Chiryū Station, where Meitetsu routes join, and their straight tracks cut cleanly through the fine street pattern.
The city is known for irises. The kakitsubata of Yatsuhashi, remembered through an episode of the Tales of Ise, are associated with the gardens at Muryōju-ji, which bloom each spring.
