Villa de Álvarez is in the state of Colima in western Mexico and borders the city of Colima directly to the north. The two have grown into a single urban area, so on a map the boundary between them is almost impossible to spot. The streets follow a mostly regular grid, with newer housing developments added at the edges in their own curved or looping layouts.
The land rises gently to the north towards the Colima volcanoes, which form the backdrop of the region. Small streams and ravines run south through the city, and in places they are still marked by narrow green strips that break the grid. Main avenues connect the centre of Villa de Álvarez with central Colima and with the highways leading out of the valley.
