Ciudad Melchor Múzquiz lies in northern Coahuila, in the area known as the Región Carbonífera for its coal deposits. The town grew from an eighteenth-century Spanish frontier settlement called Santa Rosa, and its centre still follows a regular colonial grid around a main plaza. Beyond the blocks, roads stretch across dry plains toward mining towns and the mountains to the northwest.
Coal mining has shaped the local economy for more than a century, and the landscape around town still shows it. Múzquiz is also known for the nearby communities at El Nacimiento, home to Kickapoo and Black Seminole, or Mascogo, families whose ancestors settled here in the nineteenth century. The town has been designated one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos.
