Cobán is the capital of Alta Verapaz in north-central Guatemala, set among steep, forested hills. The town grew outward from a central plaza and cathedral. Near the centre its streets follow a rough grid, then bend and climb as they reach the surrounding ridges. On a map the result is an irregular outline shaped by the hills and broken up by ravines and green space.
The region's cool, damp climate, known for a fine persistent drizzle called chipi-chipi, suits coffee and cardamom, and Alta Verapaz is one of the world's largest cardamom producers. German planters settled here in the late nineteenth century and left a lasting mark on the coffee trade. The town is also known for its orchids and as the gateway to Semuc Champey.
