Colchester lies just north of Burlington on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. Its map is shaped by water. A long, irregular shoreline turns into the sheltered inlet of Malletts Bay, and the Winooski River forms much of the town's southern edge. Roads follow the shore, while inland neighbourhoods spread over gentle, partly wooded ground.
The town is home to Saint Michael's College, whose campus sits near the Winooski side, and it has a busy summer life on the bay. A notable feature is the Colchester Causeway, an old railway embankment that runs far out into the lake as a narrow path. It is now part of a trail used by cyclists and walkers.
