Conceição da Barra lies on the northern coast of Espírito Santo, close to the border with Bahia. The town sits where the São Mateus River, also known locally as the Cricaré, meets the Atlantic. From above it forms a compact grid on a strip of land between the river mouth, the mangroves and the open beach.
The municipality is best known for Itaúnas, a village to the north where large sand dunes buried the original settlement in the twentieth century. The villagers rebuilt across the river. Today the dunes are protected within a state park, and the village is known across Brazil for its forró music scene. On the map, the coast runs in a long, smooth line with sand and restinga behind it.

Toward Itaúnas
North of town, the coast continues towards the dunes and village of Itaúnas. Sand and coastal vegetation replace streets in a wide, open landscape.
