Conceição do Mato Dentro lies in central Minas Gerais, on the edge of the Serra do Espinhaço, the long mountain range that runs north through the state. It grew in the eighteenth century during the gold era and sits on the Estrada Real, the colonial route that linked the mining towns to the coast. The map shows a compact old centre set in a valley, with streets bending to the terrain.
The surrounding municipality is known for its waterfalls and rugged landscape, above all the Cachoeira do Tabuleiro, one of the tallest waterfalls in Brazil, in a protected area outside the town. More recently the region has also become associated with large-scale iron ore mining, which added new roads and infrastructure beyond the historic core.
