Copiapó lies in the valley of the Copiapó River, a narrow strip of irrigated land running through the southern Atacama Desert. On a map the city stretches along the valley floor, with dry, steep hills on both sides. As a result its shape is long and narrow rather than round.
The historic centre keeps a Spanish colonial grid around the Plaza de Armas, a shaded square planted with pepper trees. From there the city extends up and down the valley, and newer districts climb the lower slopes. The river is often dry, but its course and the farmland beside it still mark a clear line through the urban area.
Copiapó has long been a mining centre. In 1851 Chile's first railway opened here, linking the city with the port of Caldera, and in 2010 the world followed the rescue of 33 miners trapped in the nearby San José mine.
