Cormeilles-en-Parisis lies in the Val-d'Oise, northwest of Paris, on the slopes of the Butte de Cormeilles, one of the hills that rise above the Seine valley. On a map the town spreads from the base of this hill, with streets bending around its flanks and a broad band of woodland and open ground covering the summit.
The hill has long been quarried for gypsum, used to make plaster, and large quarry areas remain on the upper slopes. From above they appear as irregular unbuilt zones set against the regular residential streets below. The railway from Paris Saint-Lazare runs through the lower part of town, with a station that connects residents directly to the capital.
Louis Daguerre, the inventor of the daguerreotype and a pioneer of photography, was born in Cormeilles in 1787 and remains its most famous native.
