Courcelles lies in the province of Hainaut, just west of Charleroi, on land that was once part of the Walloon coal basin. The municipality brings together several former villages, including Trazegnies, Souvret, Forchies-la-Marche and Gouy-lez-Piéton, and on a map they appear as separate clusters linked by roads through farmland rather than as a single compact town.
The mining past is still legible in the layout: rows of workers’ housing along the main roads, railway alignments and spoil heaps now covered with trees. At Trazegnies stands a castle whose origins go back to the Middle Ages, one of the most notable historic buildings in the area. Between the villages, open fields keep a rural character remarkably close to the city.
