Crateús lies in the far west of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, near the border with Piauí. It is a sertão town, surrounded by semi-arid country, and from above its centre is a compact grid of streets on fairly flat ground. Around it the urban area loosens into lower-density neighbourhoods, then into open land crossed by a few long roads.
The Poti River runs through Crateús on its way west into Piauí, and it is one of the few rivers here that crosses the Serra da Ibiapaba rather than flowing away from it. On a map the river adds a winding line through a largely rectilinear town, with bridges connecting the neighbourhoods on each bank. A railway line also passes through, adding another long straight stroke.
