Crépy-en-Valois sits in the south of the Oise department, in the open, rolling country northeast of Paris. It was once the capital of the historic Valois region, whose counts gave their name to a French royal dynasty. From above, the oldest streets gather on higher ground, and the town spreads outward from there in rings of later growth.
The historic centre is a tight knot of narrow, irregular lanes, with the old castle, now home to a museum of archery and the Valois, at its edge. Around it, wider streets and boulevards trace a looser outline. Newer residential districts and the railway line to Paris extend the town toward the surrounding farmland.
Beyond the built-up area, broad fields of the Valois plateau alternate with the large forests that characterise this part of northern France.
