Cuiabá is the capital of Mato Grosso, set on the east bank of the Cuiabá River. The river winds along the western edge of the city, and on the far bank sits Várzea Grande, which forms part of the same urban area. Bridges link the two, and the combined street network spreads out in every direction from the water.
The city began in the eighteenth century as a gold-mining settlement, and its old centre still has a close, irregular street pattern. Around it, broad avenues and newer districts extend over the gently rolling land. Cuiabá lies close to the geodesic centre of South America, a point commemorated by a monument in the city.
It is also a gateway to the Pantanal wetlands to the south and to the Chapada dos Guimarães plateau to the northeast. Arena Pantanal hosted matches during the 2014 World Cup. A Cuiabá map poster shows a city shaped by its river and its position at the centre of the continent.
