Curuçá lies in the state of Pará in northern Brazil, on the Atlantic coast east of the Amazon estuary. The region is shaped by tides: rivers and channels cut deep into the land, and wide belts of mangrove line the coast and the waterways. From above, the map shows a small, compact town beside the water, with a complex coastline beyond it.
Much of the municipality's coastal area is protected as a marine extractive reserve, where local communities fish and gather crabs and shellfish from the mangroves. The streets of the town form a modest pattern near the river, while roads head inland across the flat countryside. Most of the drama on the map belongs to the water, not the streets.
